“Hi, my name is Max. My favourite things to do are dancing and ceramics. About a year and a half ago my cousin Joey suggested that I start my own business making pottery and use the money from the sales to pay for me to make work regularly. I decided to call my business ‘Pottery to the Max’ and my cousin Joey designed my logo and business cards and with the help of REDinc and a My Choice Matters grant, my business was born.
After 18 months, I now work two days a week with a ceramicist that REDinc organised for me, called Claudia, who supports me to design and make many different things that I sell through a shop in Mullumbimby called Sunshine Alley. The shop owner, Susie, loves my work and sells a lot. With the money I make I bought a kiln and pay Claudia for her time supporting me.
I am making enough work now that I am looking for another shop to sell it and hope in the near future to make enough money that I can pay for all my materials, dance lessons and even a holiday to visit my parents in France.”
The REDinc artists-with-a-disability community is widely celebrated across the Northern Rivers for its outstanding achievements in the Arts. Many have gone from never having picked up a paintbrush to becoming semi professional artists in their own right exhibiting their works across Australia and overseas, selling their pieces to generate an income for themselves.
